Home Insulation
What is R-Value?
R-value is the term used to measure the flow of heat through an
object or material. A higher number indicates that the object or
material has a higher insulating capability.
How much insulation should my home have?
Generally R-40 in recommend for most attics. This translates into
approximately 11" of blown cellulose and 15" of blown fibreglass.
How do you install insulation in my attic?
Insulation is pneumatically placed using a truck mounted insulation
machine. The material is pumped from the machine up to the attic
through a three inch hose where the installer carefully applies
the required thickness.
Foam
What is sprayed polyurethane Foam insulation?
Sprayed polyurethane foam insulation is a rigid cellular plastic.
Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation acts as insulation, an air barrier
and also a vapour barrier.
Is sprayed polyurethane foam insulation environmentally
friendly?
One of the Canadian Urethane Foam Contractors association (CUFCA)
objectives is to provide the most environmentally friendly insulation
product in the industry. CUFCA does extensive testing to ensure
that their product is safe and environmentally friendly.
Who applies sprayed polyurethane foam insulation?
Only a CUFCA licensed installer is allowed to apply sprayed polyurethane
foam insulation. To obtain licensing the installer needs to pass
classroom instruction, hands on training and they must obtain experience
in the field under the supervision of a trained contractor.
Asbestos
What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a mineral fibre. It can be positively identified only
with a special type of microscope. There are several types of asbestos
fibres. In the past, asbestos was added to a variety of products
to strengthen them and to provide heat insulation and fibre resistance.
Why should I have asbestos removed?
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the World Health
Organization (WHO), and the EPA have determined that asbestos is
a human carcinogen.
Attic Insulation Removal
Why would I remove my insulation?
Insulation is often removed when it is damaged by smoke, water,
mould or animal infestation. It can also be removed if the homeowner
wishes to switch insulating materials i.e. from fibreglass to blown
cellulose insulation.
